Welcome to KidsHealth!
KidsHealth is the largest and most-visited site on the Web providing doctor-approved health information about children from before birth through adolescence. Created by The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media, the award-winning KidsHealth provides families with accurate, up-to-date, and jargon-free health information they can use. KidsHealth has been on the Web since 1995 — and has been accessed by about half a billion visitors. On a typical weekday, more than 500,000 visitors access KidsHealth's reliable information.
KidsHealth has separate areas for kids, teens, and parents — each with its own design, age-appropriate content, and tone. There are literally thousands of in-depth features, articles, animations, games, and resources — all original and all developed by experts in the health of children and teens.
Physicians and other health experts review all content before it's published on KidsHealth. All content is re-reviewed on a regular basis (about every 1 to 3 years, or more frequently if needed). You can find the most recent review date and the name of the expert reviewer(s) at the end of each article. You can learn more about how we create our content by visiting our editorial policy page.
Learning About Health
Learning about health isn't just about medical diseases and conditions. It's also learning about the amazing ways the body works — and how to keep it working in the best way possible. It's about normal physical development and stages — and how they can differ from person to person. It's about the emotions and worries almost everyone faces — and how to keep things balanced. It's about stress that can interfere with daily life — and what to do to get some help. It's about thinking ahead so you can do the things you need to stay healthy — and how to prevent the things that can cause serious problems later on. It's about how families function in the good times — and in the bad. It's about the joys and challenges of parenting — and what families can do to help their kids and teens travel along the path that's best for them. It's about knowing you're not alone. It's about understanding yourself, your friends and family, and the world around you.
How Is KidsHealth Created?
The KidsHealth team of top-notch editors and medical reviewers develops a wide array of topics about medical, emotional, and developmental issues of children and their families. The content on KidsHealth is the equivalent of an 80-volume encyclopedia — and it's growing every week.
Together, we seek to make all KidsHealth content:
Understandable. We're experts at translating complex medical information into easy-to-understand language for parents, kids, and teens.
Reliable. The many hundreds of original articles on the site all undergo rigorous medical review by children's health experts and other professionals from The Nemours Foundation and other renowned health care facilities nationwide.
Practical. KidsHealth articles combine clear, explanatory information about health and wellness with practical advice about how our readers can apply this information day to day.
Objective. As a not-for-profit organization, we have no axes to grind, so you can enjoy information that is balanced, direct, and uninfluenced by commercial interests. Our sole focus is on helping families and their children.
What About Your Child's Doctor?
Should KidsHealth take the place of your doctor? Absolutely not. Nothing takes the place of a consultation with a physician, a health history, a physical exam, and a two-way conversation with time for questions and answers. What KidsHealth can do is help you develop a deeper understanding of the many physical, emotional, and behavioral issues affecting children and teens — and encourage you to actively pursue good health and wellness for a lifetime.
Nemours Center for Children's Health Media
The Nemours Center for Children's Health Media is a part of The Nemours Foundation, an organization created by philanthropist Alfred I. duPont in 1936 and devoted to improving the health of children. The Center creates family-friendly print, video, and CD-ROM projects about children's health and development for parents, kids, and teens.
Among our recent projects is Fit Kids — published worldwide by Dorling Kindersley — a beautifully illustrated book for parents concerned about keeping their kids and teens eating healthy and in good shape. We also created Charles Scribner's Sons' multi-volume Encyclopedia of Human Diseases and Conditions, distributed in schools and libraries throughout the United States. Our 800-page softbound book, KidsHealth Guide for Parents — Pregnancy to Age 5, is published by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Press. A variety of videos for families on a range of health topics are available through the American Academy of Pediatrics and educational video distributors.
The pediatrician-led Center is unique in the nation with its exclusive focus on children's health media — and offers a post-residency fellowship in Children's Health Media for physicians seeking to further develop their skills in health communications. At times, other job openings at KidsHealth include editorial, design, and technology positions.
